Start Your Foundation of Health for Long-Term Wellness

We all want to live our best lives. Each person’s “best life” varies, but you’ll need an understanding of health and wellness to consistently feel your best.  At MidSouth Integrative Medical, we believe that focusing on the three dimensions of health is what leads to overall wellness. A wellness journey should always start with a foundation of health, and it’s our goal to help you achieve it.

The Three Dimensions of Health

Health and wellness goals are different for everyone. We see three main dimensions of health: Physical, mental, and emotional. The physical focuses on the function of your body itself, the mental focuses on your cognitive functions, and the emotional focuses on how you feel with yourself and the world around you.

Physical Health

On its own, being physically healthy is largely defined as the absence of disease or illness. While true, this is not all-encompassing. Your physical health also includes how you eat, the amount of exercise you receive weekly, how you sleep, and the overall condition of your body. The ability to fight off illness and maintain strength can also be indicators of physical health.

If your body is in peak physical shape, you likely have a life that includes adequate sleep, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and you seek out proactive medical care. Those who stay physically fit typically have strong bodies that allow them to partake in daily or even strenuous physical activities without easily fatiguing or getting injured.

Mental Health

Mental health refers to psychological well-being, and the capability to think logically, adapt, and make informed choices. Managing stress, overcoming difficulties, connecting with people, and self-image are all heavily influenced by one’s mental health status. Just like physical health, being mentally healthy includes the absence or proper management of conditions like depression and anxiety.

A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body, and they go hand-in-hand. When mental health suffers, physical health tends to dip as well. Someone who is mentally healthy is likely mindful and self-aware, knows proper stress management tactics, finds it easy to connect with themselves and others, and may connect with a therapist or psychiatrist regularly to manage any existing conditions.

Emotional Health

Good emotional health focuses on the ability to understand, express, and manage one’s feelings in a healthy and constructive way. This includes being able to recognize emotions, process them, and maintain balance during negative and positive life events.

A person with strong emotional health is able to navigate life’s ups and downs with relative ease. They experience a full range of emotions, but avoid being overwhelmed and communicate their feelings effectively. Being emotionally healthy includes the ability to address and manage conditions like mood disorders, emotional trauma, and persistent negative emotional patterns. Poor emotional health can lead to increased stress and physical tension.

How Can I Strive for Long-Term Wellness?

Wellness is a broad spectrum, and often a broad term. At MidSouth Integrative Medical, we help you narrow it down to a science. If you need a road map for long-term wellness, you’ll want to start with your health. Being mindful of your physical, mental, and emotional fitness is the best way to start a foundation to build your life on.

You can’t have wellness without health, and the balancing act is the most difficult part. When you find balance in all three facets of health, the rest comes easily.
